December Garden

December Garden

The garden beds are snow-covered and under a thick layer of leaves, perfect conditions for heading into another year. Now I’m able to sit back and relax. December and January are my vacation from the hard part of gardening.

There’s nothing to do outside, but I do have work, including organizing seeds and supplies, setting up the grow lights, and ordering any seeds or materials I’ll need for the new season.

Seeds won’t be ordered until January, but I like to get my order in for potatoes in December. I buy seed potatoes from Wood Prairie Farm in Bridgewater, Maine, and I’ve been their loyal customer for many years

We met the Wood Prairie family at an industry conference. They are, like us, a small family business. Their product quality is excellent, and they are true champions for the organic, healthy soil approach to food growing.

A variety that Judy particularly likes is Adirondack Red.  These red-skinned potatoes have a pink patterned flesh.

They make unique pink mashed potatoes.

I’m looking forward to the next gardening year, and the rest from the chores until then. Growing a lot of the food we eat is rewarding, but it is hard work.
