February Garden Update

The ground is bare. The once deep snow melted with a week-long warm spell, but it’s cold again. The only things blooming are some snowdrops. We won’t be doing anything outside in the garden for at least a month.

I did a good job of getting the garden beds covered with leaves last fall. That will make spring preparation easier. There are a few beds that will need some heavy weeding, but most of the beds should be ready to plant with just a little shaping up.

The first task will be to clean a bed and set up a low hoop tunnel.  Once that’s done, I can start moving in some lettuce starts. Then onions, and eventually all the tender seedlings that will finish their hardening off in the tunnel. From the tunnel, they’ll be transplanted to their final home.

Here are three flats of onions, the only things I’ve started so far. I normally only grow a yellow and red storage onion, but this year I added a flat of Cipollini onions.  These small flat onions will add flavor to some of Judy’s Italian dishes (and other cuisines, too).
